Equitation

As a seasoned equitation rider and coach, Laura is intimately familiar with the process of refining equitation style and making small changes that result in top ribbons. As a veteran of the horse show world she is also intimately familiar with what for many young people is their first exposure to a highly competitive environment, the opportunities for growth and the challenges it presents. Laura’s guidance as a coach, own competitive performances and relationships with peers and clients have earned her the privilege of being a respected equestrian and a welcome competitor. Laura’s own competitive spirit and sense of sportsmanship seems to give her students more of their own.

Many years after Laura had ridden in an equitation class, past Olympians, riders who have represented the USET and riders from the Pan American games were invited to participate in an equitation exhibition class at WEF. For the class riders were on borrowed horses. Awarded a score of 86.6, Laura demonstrated just how familiar she still is with equitation class competition.

George Morris, who has been a huge influence on Laura for her entire riding career and continues to be a source of inspiration and guidance, was the commentator in the video below. He described her round as “demonstrating naturalness, pace and relaxation” and well-deserving of her score.

Hunters

Because many of Laura’s clients who compete in hunter classes do not have as much time as they would like to dedicate to train, they rely upon Laura’s coaching and training to serve as a catalyst; maximizing the effectiveness of their time and efforts.

Continuity of Laura’s hunter training helps clients pick up where they left off, and she combines fundamentals with subtle evolution of technique to steadily advance and fine-tune hunter skills.

The combination of enthusiasm, diligent practice and good coaching has consistently produced top ribbons for Laura’s hunter clients.

Jumpers

From the juniors to the grand prix ring, Laura stresses fundamentals and achieving ride-ability through effective horsemanship with an emphasis on flatwork.

Because horses and conditions are so varied, Laura believes that continuously developing and fine-tuning core riding skills is imperative to advancing improvisational technique that ultimately leads to winning rounds.

In this video, Laura demonstrates this on three very different horses.

Training with Laura is embracing the practice of seeking to perfect riding skills on all levels. Clients benefit from Laura’s insatiable appetite for knowledge about the sport, her enthusiasm to build her clients’ repertoire of riding skills and her ability to very effectively teach what she learns.

Building upon her wide scope of experiences and teachings from mentors, Laura has developed a curriculum that puts the horse and horsemanship first. Similar to many European coaches, Laura believes that a multi-disciplinary approach to riding is essential. She has immersed herself in the equestrian world for over 26 years and still gets excited about learning from riders ranging from Olympic dressage gold medalists to cowboys. In viewing videos of some of her wins, it is not hard to see how tempe changes, gymnastics and barrel racing have evolved into seamless flying changes, steady big in and outs and seconds shaving cornering on grand prix courses.

Laura regards sharing knowledge as one of her great successes and frequently even does so with competitors. She provides young riders like Kelsey Calabro the same opportunities she was afforded.

Laura’s clients some of whom have been training with her long enough to have had children who are now riding with her, all still have fun working as hard as they do - and they have the smiles and ribbons to prove it.
